Bought a bangle online only to find it won't slide past your knuckles? You're not alone. Bangle sizing trips people up because unlike rings the size has nothing to do with your wrist. It's about the widest part of your hand so it's important that you get it right or it will be too loose and will just slip right off your wrist.
The Quick Answer
Wrap a strip of paper around your hand at its widest point (fingers together, thumb tucked). Measure the length, divide by 3.14. That number in millimetres is your inner diameter — your bangle size.
Two Ways to Measure
Method 1: Paper Strip (Most Common)
No tools required. Works for any bangle.
Make sure to have: A strip of paper or string, a pen, a ruler.
Steps:
- Press your fingers together and fold your thumb across your palm. This is the position your hand makes when passing through a bangle.
- Wrap the paper strip snugly around your knuckles — the widest part of your hand.
- Mark where it overlaps — just a small line where the paper meets itself.
- Lay it flat and measure from the start to your mark. This is your hand circumference in mm.
- Divide by 3.14 to get your inner diameter.
Example: 190 mm ÷ 3.14 = 60.5 mm → Size Medium (2-8)
- Add 2–4 mm if you want a comfortable fit rather than a snug one.
Method 2: Existing Bangle (Most Accurate)
If you already own a bangle that fits perfectly, skip the paper entirely.
- Place the bangle flat on a table.
- Measure straight across the inside of the bangle from one inner edge to the other.
- That measurement (in mm) is your bangle size.
Use calipers for the most precise reading, or a ruler placed across the centre.

Note on Indian sizing: The number system (2-2, 2-4, 2-6…) refers to fractions of an inch. Sizes increase by 2 mm increments. If a brand uses S/M/L only, always cross-reference with the inner diameter in mm before buying.
5 Tips to Get Your Size Right
Measure in the afternoon. Hands swell slightly throughout the day. A morning measurement may leave you with a bangle that's tight by evening.
Avoid cold weather. Cold causes fingers to shrink. You'll measure small and end up with a bangle that's too loose once you're back indoors.
When in doubt, size up. A bangle that's even 2 mm too small won't pass over your knuckles. There's no stretching a metal or glass bangle. Always round up to the next size if you're between measurements.
Rigid vs. hinged bangles. For solid rigid bangles with no opening, your knuckle circumference is what matters. For hinged or adjustable bangles, use your wrist measurement instead — the bangle opens to go on, so knuckle size is irrelevant.
Ask for mm, not letters. If ordering from a jeweller (especially Indian or South Asian jewellery brands), always ask for the inner diameter in millimetres. Lettered sizing (S/M/L) is inconsistent across brands and countries.
